How to Learn Web Design

Few years ago I wanted to learn web design so that I build a website for myself. It was a static website: HTML and CSS, these two are a must learn. My learning source was the Internet which is full of web design courses and tutorials.

Dreamweaver helped me with HTML coding and CSS, Photoshop helped me with graphic design and occasionally I use Illustrator, these three applications are useful to learn.

Few years ago I wondered how dynamic websites and online shops are built. I chose to learn PHP from several programming languages, and I found it useful for storing and retrieving data from database tables (MySQL). You would need to learn PHP and MySQL if you want to design a dynamic website.

It was fun to construct a database and to write my own PHP code. Although the primary purpose of my learning was to build my website, I ended up designing websites for living.

But wait…, today, with most of your web design projects you rarely need to write your own code. Not just because other people already did the work for us but also because there are applications that will do most of the work for us.

Few years ago I discovered Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla and I wish I discovered them sooner. My PHP knowledge helped my use these three content management systems, but any average person can use any of them without any PHP or MySQL knowledge.

Although there are templates and themes available for those applications, I think it is necessary to know some HTML and CSS to help you design your website and give it the look you want. It is also good to know the basics of server administration.

Today, jQuery has become popular as well as responsive design for mobile and other media support; make sure you learn about them. Social media is also becoming very important; find out about the different applications available and try using them productively for your own purpose.

Finally, if you would like to inspire yourself to continue self-development and keep up-to-date with web design, you need to separate between web design and web development. Choose one field for yourself, master it, and be creative.
